WOrking on a personal illustration, this is my typical process. Sometimes I will skip the sketch phase and just enlarge and refine the thumbnail, but most of the time it's a good idea for me to make a more polished drawing first.

when paintings go bad

This is a sketch I did some time ago in preparation for an oil painting. The painting has clocked over 20 hours and I just realized that the sketch looks better.
